Spianada

The largest square in the Balkans

Spianada square is considered as the largest square throughout the Balkan peninsula, covering an area of 84,000 square meters. It is one of the most beautiful sights of the island, as it combines the green area in front of the famous “Liston Street” and an assembly of Venetian, French and British historical monuments in its northern part. Divided into the Upper and the Lower square, it constitutes an ideal choise for walking, viewing towards the sea and the old fortress, whereas enjoying the bright Corfiot sun.
The Lower Square
The Lower Square features a green cricket pitch, where notable groups from all over the island train and compete. Although it does not function as a playground area, it is still children’s’ favourite spot , since they can play, run and roll above the grass. The lavishly green grass, especially during the spring and summer season, is combined beautifully with the rich architecture of Liston, while its natural beauty transfuses to the walkers a sense of rejuvenation.
The Upper Square
The Upper Square extends opposite to Liston Street and the famous "Pentofanaro", the most distinctive meeting point for Corfiots and visitors. In the centre of the square, there is the so-called "Bandstand", in front of which festivals with eminent orchestras of classical or jazz music take place, whereas during Easter all philharmonic bands gather around. The square is adorned by exquisite architectural monuments, such as the sculptures of "the Union of the Ionian Islands", each of them standing for an island. Aside from the fountain, towards the end of the square, the peristyle “Maitland” rises with 20 ionic columns. Both during morning and evening, Spianada square is the most mundane point, while it teems with laughers and voices of children and young people.
